Room With A View

about

I love the idea of making the most out of what you have. The idea that the room you're in and what you see from it doesn't have to dictate your view or your outlook.

I often find people with less are forced to be more creative, insightful and resourceful. This song is a tribute to everyone who is making the most out of their situation.

I brought this track to Aron Kyne to help produce and he added the beautiful synth parts and subtle drum parts that give the track this pulsating breathing quality. This was originally some time in 2017 and we got 90% of the song finished. Then I just added it to a large pile of unfinished material.

When the lockdown happened in 2020 it allowed me to go through some of the unfinished songs and ideas I have. The chorus seemed to take on a new meaning under the new circumstances.

lyrics

They say life i what you make it, enjoy or endure
Nothing is for sure except one day there's an end to it
No-one's getting out of life alive
Today 200,000 leave, 350,000 arrive
And as sure as you and I were arrivals once
We've all got return tickets and our time will come
I only say that to say this
Enjoy or endure it, this life is what you make it
And old friend told me the day he became rich
Was the day he learned to live on the basics
He told me for my happiness's sake quit
Thinking that I have to change what's already sacred
He asked me strong my spirit was and if I was broke, would that break it?
See there's no mirror on your wage slip
So how much you earn and how much you're worth's not the same shit
So I dedicate this

To them souls
Who may have the least
But learn to make the most
And if you never play by their rules
How can you lose?
They locked you down
But you turned a jail cell
Into a room with a view

All we can do is do our best I guess
Every one of us climbing our own Everest
Some of us have made light work of the precipice
Others wait for a reply to their SOS
Our beautiful world is operated by
Ugly souls with empty hearts and crazy minds
They define success by using numbers
They don't understand money isn't true abundance
In their tall glass towers
Working out ways to get all that's ours
They call that power
We call them cowards
They think that they're wise but
I found wisdom in the innocence of childhood
I asked my niece what she wants to be when she grows up
'Cause she doesn't worry about finances
She said 'I just want to be happy and free'
I held her and I told her 'My darling, that's a fine answer'
So I dedicate this

To them souls
Who may have the least
But learn to make the most
And if you never play by their rules
How can you lose?
They locked you down
But you turned a jail cell
Into a room with a view

And I'm learning from you
In your room with a view

So I dedicate this

To them souls
Who may have the least
But learn to make the most
And if you never play by their rules
How can you lose?
They locked you down
But you turned a jail cell
Into a room with a view
