Everything Is Changing

about

I wrote the first verse and chorus of this in early February 2020. I clicked into this idea about writing about the cluster of grey hairs that have appeared in my beard and how they signify change. In voluntary change. This made me think about how everything is always changing and how a large amount of our problems in life come from resisting the change. The song would sit in a half finished state for a month or so.

Fast forward to late March 2020 and the Coronavirus was sweeping the world. As I work in schools and as a musician this meant that all my income pretty much disappeared overnight. My girlfriend and I decided it will be the smart thing to do to limit our costs and move out. As the song says, 'My girlfriend said her mum said we're welcome' and so we left our flat in London and went to stay with her in South Yorkshire. Again, I was confronted with this involuntary change. I knew then what the 2nd verse should be about. I loved linking it back into the first verse with the last line.

The third verse is the resolution to the story. The only real choice you have when faced with change is surrender. It felt right to sing this part rather than rap it.

lyrics

I guess everything is changing

I’m counting greys in my beard
And their presence is alien
Ever since they’ve appeared
I’ve felt this sense of failure
Like I’ve allowed them to grow
I know
That’s ridiculous to put it in a song
And my solution is to pick up my Mrs's tweezers
And begin meticulously plucking each one
And like silk they shine on the porcelain
And now I’m back to black like Amy
Trying to find silver linings but all there is
Is silver lines in the basin
I run the tap and wash 'em down the drain
Like nobody would even know
And I can still pass for 22
Well, at least for a week or so

I guess everything is changing
and that's how it's meant to be
It's not what I want
but it may be what I need
And I grow even when it's hard to
looking at the hour glass
like it's half full
And everything is changing
and it is what it is
Things'll be alright
As long as I just don't resist
and I don't become short sighted
'Cause life's too short
to worry 'bout how short life is

They say there's summat up in China
and the people are getting sick
And it's spreading round the world now
And it's got here very quick
And they're closing all the schools down
And they're banning all the shows
And it's pandemonium, I'm panicking
'cause they're the only channels
I have to get dough
It's high rent for a flat down in London
Suddenly I'm at a cross road junction
We could stay, get in debt, try and chance it
or pack everything we own in a transit
my girlfriend said her mum said we're welcome
and I'm just grateful that people want to help us
I'm trying to figure everything that happened out
But them grey hairs don't matter now

I guess everything is changing
and that's how it's meant to be
It's not what I want
but it may be what I need
And I grow even when it's hard to
looking at the hour glass
like it's half full
And everything is changing
and it is what it is
Things'll be alright
As long as I just don't resist
and I don't become short sighted
'Cause life's too short
to worry

And all I can do is just surrender
Bring all my focus to the now
Drop my shoulders
Find my centre
Remember to breathe in and breathe out
I guess I'm going where I'm meant to
That may be up or may be down
Or maybe there is no great agenda
Maybe we can't know why or how

and I guess everything is changing
and that's how it's meant to be
It's not what I want
but it may be what I need
And I grow even when it's hard to
looking at the hour glass
